In the name of Allāh, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Assalāmu ῾alaykum wa Rahmatullāhi Wabarakātuh 1. Musāfaha (to shake hands) is permissible with one hand or two hands. However, musāfaha with two hands is preferred as this is in conformity with the practice of the salaf (pious predecessors) and is supported by the rulings of the Fuqahā (Jurists). Allāmah Anwar Shah Kashmīri (rahimahullah) has written that musāfaha with two hands is the complete sunna.[1] Musāfaha with two hands is preferred for the following reasons: - It is recorded in Sahih Bukhāri that Hammād bin Zaid (rahimahullāh) made musāfaha with Abdullāh bin Mubārak (rahimahullāh) using both his hands.[2] - Imām Bukhāri (rahimahullāh) was of the view that musāfaha is with two hands. In his Sahih, he has recorded the above incident (of Hammād bin Zaid (rahimahullāh)), indicating that the preferred method of musāfaha is with two hands and not one hand.[3] - The books of Hanafi fiqh explain that the method of musāfaha is with two hands.[4] - We are advised in the ahādīth to avoid the practices of the disbelievers. By doing musāfaha with one hand, one would be resembling the ways of the disbelievers.[5] We have sufficed on the above points. There are other points that add to the dynamics of this discussion. The Arabic texts below may be referred to for further academic consumption.[6] 2. The purpose of bay’ah is islāh (reformation). If one has taken bay’ah to a shaykh, but for some reason is unable to have his islāh made by his shaykh; then he may search for another shaykh that will take care of his spiritual reformation and make his islāh. He will not be sinful in doing this. And Allāh Ta῾āla Knows Best
