Who was Abu Ayyuub al-Ansari radiayallahu anhu and can you briefly explain a history of him?
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Abu Ayyuub al-Ansari, radiayallahu anhu, was a companion of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.[1]
He was from amongst the Ansaar.[2]
His real name was Khalid Ibn Zaid Ibn Kulaib. His mother’s name was Hind Bint Saeed.[3]
He participated in many battles and important events such as the Battle of Badr, the Battle of Uhud and the Pledge of ‘Aqabah. In fact, he participated in all the events in which the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam partook.[4]
When the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, migrated to Madinah, he stayed at Abu Ayyub al-Ansari’s house as a guest until his own house was built.[5]
The Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, established brotherhood between him and Musab Ibn ‘Umair, radiyallahu anhu.[6]
When Ali, radiallahu anhu left for Iraq, he appointed Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, radiyallahu anhu, as his deputy. Abu Ayyub later on joined him and aided him in fighting the Khawarij.[7]
He died in 50 hijri and according to some narrations, 51 and according to some 52. He died during an expedition against Constantinople under the army of Yazeed Ibn Muawiyah where he suddenly became extremely ill. He was buried in a place close to Constantinople. [8]
