Question Summary: When is laylat al-Qadr? Question Detail:
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
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. Laylatul Qadr could be on any night throughout the year. It is even more likely that laylatul Qadr is in Ramadhan and that too, during the odd nights. It is not an absolute given that laylatul Qadr is in Ramadhan and that too on the odd nights.Laylatul Qadr could be on any even night. We are not required to search for the crescent on the odd nights of Ramadhan. Our responsibility is to exert ourselves in search of laylatul Qadr especially in the last ten nights of Ramadhan. Rasulullah (salallahu alaihi wasalam) said he was made to forget when laylatul Qadr is - Bukhari Vol. 1 (Chapter of Salaah) And Allah Knows Best. Mufti Ebrahim Desai
