Question Summary: When do I have to cut my hair after ihraam? How much Islam do I need to learn? Question Detail:
. I had a short time for Umrah unfortunately I didn't have time to shave/trim my hair in Makkah but did so at Jeddah Airport then removed my ihram. Is my Umrah done and correct? What are the concequences of not learning Islam as much as I should do?
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Your Umrah is valid. However, you will have to sacrifice one sheep/goat as a penalty (dam) for trimming/shaving your hair outside of the haram.[1] It is also necessary that this sacrifice is performed within the limits and boundaries of the haram. If you are abroad, then you may get this done by any other person or on your next visit to haram.[2]
Rasullullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam has stated:
طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيضَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ Seeking knowledge is a duty upon every Muslim.[3] It is compulsory to seek knowledge on the basic necessities a Muslim is required to perform. For example, how to make wudhu, how to perform Salah, how to do business according to the rulings of Shari’ah, etc. If one does not acquire knowledge on the basic necessities a Muslim is required to perform, then he will fail in his duties as a Muslim. He will not perform his Wudhu and Salah correctly. His income will be doubtful or haram due to unlawful transactions. As such, one will be violating the laws of Shari’ah and he will be sinful for not acquiring adequate knowledge on the basics of Shari’ah. As it is pertinent for each and every Muslim to acquire this sufficient knowledge, there are also many virtues for a person who decides to strive in the path of Allah for his sake and acquire knowledge for His deen. Some virtues and merits mentioned in the Qur’an and Ahadith are as follows:[4] وَمَنْ سَلَكَ طَرِيقًا يَلْتَمِسُ فِيهِ عِلْمًا، سَهَّلَ اللَّهُ لَهُ بِهِ طَرِيقًا إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ، وَمَا اجْتَمَعَ قَوْمٌ فِي بَيْتٍ مِنْ بُيُوتِ اللَّهِ، يَتْلُونَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ، وَيَتَدَارَسُونَهُ بَيْنَهُمْ، إِلَّا حَفَّتْهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ، وَنَزَلَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّكِينَةُ، وَغَشِيَتْهُمُ الرَّحْمَةُ، وَذَكَرَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِيمَنْ عِنْدَهُ، وَمَنْ أَبْطَأَ بِهِ عَمَلُهُ لَمْ يُسْرِعْ بِهِ نَسَبُهُ Whoever follows a path in pursuit of knowledge, Allah will make easy fro him a path to paradise. No people gather in one of the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and teaching it to one another, but the angels will surround them, tranquility will descend upon them, mercy will envelop them and Allah will mention them to those who are with Him. And whoever is hindered because of his bad deeds, his lineage will be of no avail to him.[5] مَا مِنْ خَارِجٍ خَرَجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ فِي طَلَبِ الْعِلْمِ، إِلَّا وَضَعَتْ لَهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا رِضًا بِمَا يَصْنَعُ There is no one who goes out of his house in order to seek knowledge, but the angels lower their wings in approval of his action.[6] يَرْفَعِ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنْكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا العِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.[7] It is clear from the Qur’an and Ahadith that deeni knowledge is not only something which is extremely important to us but also something that holds great value and merits. We advise you to make the following dua: رَّبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا Oh Allah, increase me in knowledge.[8] With the barakah of this dua, you will be spurred to seek the knowledge of Shari’ah and increase upon it. Knowledge of Shari’ah increases your vision and quality of life.
