Question Summary: What is the position of a person’s Iman who utters the statements “You follow Allah’s commands and then you are persecuted by the infidels and then even Allah doesn’t help you out”? Question Detail:
My husband once during conversation said that if a believer has to still be persecuted by the infidels and suffer a lot while practicing islam then I am better off as a non muslim. I interjected and told him it was kufr and later he said either istighfar or kalima tayyabah. He has this habit of saying things like you follow Allah's commands and then you are persecuted by the infidels and then even Allah doesn't help you out. Sometimes he would say kalima tayyabah after such statements and would say I believe in Allah and all his attributes. I am quite concerned that this is all kufr and such statements invalidate both the imaan as well as nikah. Please guide me what should I do in this situation?
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
This world is a place of trials and tribulations. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala puts a believer through various tests and difficulties in order to test his Imaan. The history of Islam is full of incidents in which the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam and his beloved companions were persecuted by the infidels. This was done by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala to test their Imaan and to show them that whosoever wishes to traverse the path of truth will have to face difficulties in this worldly life. They Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam has mentioned: الدُّنْيَا سِجْنُ الْمُؤْمِنِ، وَجَنَّةُ الْكَافِرِ “The world is a prison for the believers and a paradise for the disbelievers.” [1] It is also true that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala does not help a person who engages himself in Haram. Allah mentions in the Quran: مَا أَصَابَكَ مِنْ حَسَنَةٍ فَمِنَ اللَّهِ وَمَا أَصَابَكَ مِنْ سَيِّئَةٍ فَمِنْ نَفْسِكَ (القرآن:4: 79) “Whatever of good reaches you is from Allah, but whatever of evil befalls you is from yourself.” (Al-Quran: 4:79) You husband has acknowledged the fact that he uttered very serious statements by saying, “If a believer has to still be persecuted by the infidels and suffer a lot while practicing Islam then I am better off as a non muslim.” and “You follow Allah's commands and then you are persecuted by the infidels and then even Allah doesn't help you out”. He has also made Taubah and Istighfar for uttering such words. However, he should abstain from uttering such statements in the future as he will be placing his Imaan in danger by uttering such statements. You should try to advise him regarding this delicate issue in a kind manner. Try to inculcate the love for Allah in his heart in a diplomatic way.
