Question Summary: What are the rulings concerning the hair, beard, and mustache Question Detail:
I am here with a question regarding the hair, beard and moustache in Islam. What is the difference between the Wahabi's, who let their hair grow very long and Simson, the Jewish person who couldn't shave his hair? Are they talking about the hair on the top of the head or all hair on your head (cheek, lips and head etc.) ? I heard in a hadith that one who imitates others, such as Jewish and Christians is not a part of the Ummah. Explain this please, could Simson not shave his headhair or all hair on his face and head?
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam mentioned in the Ahadith: خَالِفُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ أَحْفُوا الشَّوَارِبَ، وَأَوْفُوا اللِّحَى Act against the polytheists, trim closely the mustache and grow the beard.[1] أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ بِإِحْفَاءِ الشَّوَارِبِ، وَإِعْفَاءِ اللِّحَى The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded to clip the mustaches and grow the beard long.[2] It is evident from the above mentioned narrations that it is wajib to lengthen the beard and trim the mustache.[3] The minimum length of the beard is one fist.[4] It is impermissible to trim the beard lesser than that.[5] Any hair growing on the cheeks from after the jawbone line may be trimmed or shaved since this does not fall under the definition of a beard.[6] Head Hair: It was the normal habit and the sunnah of the Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam to lengthen his hair until it came down to his ears. The maximum length one may keep his hair is until the shoulders. It is impermissible to lengthen the hair anymore after this.[7] The Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam would rarely shave his head hair. However, some Sahaba such as Ali Radhiallahu Anhu would regularly shave their head hair. Hence, it is permissible to do both but it is recommended and more virtuous to lengthen the hair if it is with the intention of following the sunnah.[8] Considering the modern era, it has simply become a form of fashion to lengthen the hair for looks and beauty. This should not be the primary objective. One should have the intention of following the sunnah of the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam when lengthening the hair.[9] The Hadith you refer to is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawood as follows: مَنْ تَشَبَّهَ بِقَوْمٍ فَهُوَ مِنْهُمْ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: He who copies any people is from amongst them.[10] The meaning of this Hadith is if there is a specific custom or style which resembles a certain group (usually the style of transgressors and kuffar) and the norm is if you were to adopt this custom, a stranger would tend to believe that you are from amongst that group, then this is not allowed. An example is if a person was to wear a kippah[11] or a sheital[12], then the person would be assumed to be a Jew since this is famous to be known as their clothing. Lengthening the hair in general is not known to be a custom of any specific group or culture. This is actually a sunnah of the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. If a non-Muslim or any other deviated sect happens to keep long hair and it coincides with the Sunnah, it would not be regarded as the practice of non-Muslims. Rather, the sunnah will dominate and this will not be regarded as imitating the non-Muslims.[13] And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best AbdulMannan Nizami Student Darul Iftaa Chicago, IL, USA Checked and Approved by, Mufti Ebrahim Desai. www.daruliftaa.net
As far as kids and children with no facial hair are concerned, their hair must be kept short as long hair leads to many fitnah and crises. Parents should protect their children (male) by shortening their hair.
