In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
In principle, active participation in any unlawful (harām) venture is impermissible in Islam. Allah Ta‘ālā says:
ولا تعاونوا على الإثم والعدوان
“Do not support one another in sin and transgression.” (Qur’an, 5:2)
The ruling of website development will depend on the nature and contents of the web pages that are developed. If a web developer is required to create a website for a banking company which intrinsically entails interest transactions or any other unlawful transaction, then to develop such a website will be impermissible. If, however, there is no interest transactions or unlawful transactions that are intrinsic to the web design, it will be permissible to develop such a website. [1] To develop websites with photos of women that are accessible to the public is unlawful. [2]
Graphic animation consists of moving images of photographs and other non-drawn flat visual graphic material, such as newspaper and magazine clippings. [3] If these animations contain images of women or any immoral content, undoubtedly it will be unlawful. If they are free of immoral content, then it must be considered if they contain images of animate objects. In principle, it is not permissible to draw and design pictures of animate objects. [4] Nonetheless, such digital images of animate objects that appear on electronic devices are an academically contested issue. While some scholars believe that such images do not fall under the category of picture-making (tasweer) [5], there are others who regard these images as pictures and hence consider them prohibited. [6] Therefore, it will be advisable to refrain from producing graphic animation which contain images of animate objects.
The ruling of freelance web development is the same as the ruling of web development in general. It will depend on the nature and content of the websites that are developed.
If a person’s employer demands he carries out anything unlawful, he should make an attempt to convince his employer to excuse him on religious grounds. If this fails, he should leave the job immediately if he is sure he can find halal employment elsewhere. If he is not sure he will find employment elsewhere, he need not leave his job immediately if he has no source of income to maintain himself and his dependents. Instead, he should search for halal work and when he succeeds in finding one, he should then leave his current line of work. [7]
