What is the best Durood to recite?
Is it correct to say that all Duroods are the same in sawaab irrespective of length, like Durood Ibraheem?

Is it correct to say that lengthy Duroods are too heavy on the brain? 

Answer :

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh

  • When the Ṣaḥābah Raḍi Allāhu ʿanhum enquired from Nabi Ṣallallāhu ʿalaihi wa Sallam as to how they should convey Ṣalāt upon him, he replied with the words of Durood-ê-Ibrāhīm. From this, some ʿUlama have deduced that reciting the Durood-ê-Ibrāhīm is the best way of conveying Ṣalāt and Salām upon Nabi Ṣallallāhu ʿalaihi wa Sallam, since Nabi Ṣallallāhu ʿalaihi wa Sallam would only choose for himself that which is the best.[1]

  • Those Duroods that are composed of words that convey Ṣalāt and Salām upon Nabi Ṣallallāhu ʿalaihi wa Sallam with a more intense and profound meaning are more virtuous than those that do not convey such a meaning. Therefore, it is not correct to say that all the different wordings of sending Durood on Nabi Ṣallallāhu ʿalaihi wa Sallam are all the same in reward, irrespective of how long they are.

  • Nabi Ṣallallāhu ʿalaihi wa Sallam has directed us to send Durood on him in abundance. Therefore, if a person is not able to achieve a set number of Duroods by reciting lengthy forms of Durood, then he should recite the more brief Duroods so that he may achieve his target. However, one should also recite the lengthy Duroods occasionally as they contain words by which Ṣalāt and Salām are conveyed in a better way compared to the brief Duroods that do not contain such words.

  • Lengthy Duroods have been narrated in the Aḥādīth and from the pious predecessors. Had these Duroods being ‘heavy on the brain’, they would not have been recited and taught to the Ummah. Therefore, it is not correct to say that lengthy Duroods are heavy on the brain. In fact, the apparent meaning of such a statement gives the impression that the one making such a statement is regarding a virtuous act as detrimental to the body. Thus, one should refrain from making such a statement. The reality is that if a person finds it difficult to read the lengthy Duroods, it is due to his own weakness.

    أَوْ حَلَفَ لَيُصَلِّيَنَّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - أَفْضَلَ الصَّلَاةِ فَلْيَقُلْ: اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْت عَلَى إبْرَاهِيمَ إلَخْ. هَذَا مَا قَالَ فِي الرَّوْضَةِ أَنَّهُ الصَّوَابُ، ... وَالْأَوْجَهُ الْأَوَّلُ.     لَكِنَّ الصَّوَابَ وَاَلَّذِي يَنْبَغِي الْجَزْمُ بِهِ أَنَّ أَفْضَلَهُ مَا يُقَالُ عَقِبَ التَّشَهُّدِ وَإِلَيْهِ أَشَارَ النَّاظِمُ بِقَوْلِهِ. (قُلْتُ النَّوَاوِيُّ هُنَا مَالَ إلَى مَا فِي تَشَهُّدِ الصَّلَاةِ نُقِلَا؛ لِأَنَّهُمْ إذْ سَأَلُوا النَّبِيَّا) - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ -. (كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي) عَلَيْك. (عَلَّمَ الْمَرْوِيَّا) فَقَالَ: قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ إلَى آخِرِهِ ... فَالْأَوْجَهُ مَا قَالَهُ النَّوَوِيُّ لِثُبُوتِهِ عَنْهُ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فِي أَفْضَلِ الْعِبَادَاتِ بَعْدَ الْإِيمَانِ مَعَ أَنَّهُ أَبْلَغُ مِنْ غَيْرِهِ إذْ الصَّلَاةُ الْمُشَبَّهَةُ بِصَلَاةِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى عَلَى مَنْ ذُكِرَ أَبْلَغُ مِنْ غَيْرِهَا بِلَا رَيْبٍ وَلِأَنَّهُ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - لَا يَخْتَارُ لِنَفْسِهِ الشَّرِيفَةِ إلَّا الْأَفْضَلَ.     وَلَكِنَّ الصَّوَابَ وَالَّذِي يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يُجْزَمَ بِهِ أَنَّ أَفْضَلَ مَا يُقَالُ عَقِيبَ التَّشَهُّدِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ... (روضة الطالبين وعمدة المفتين (11/ 66))
