In the name of Allāh, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Assalāmu ῾alaykum wa Rahmatullāhi Wabarakātuh In principle, the Sharī’ah discourages that which leads to a decrease in the congregation. For this reason, it is disliked to hold a second congregation similar to the first one in the same Masjid since people will lose the importance of the main (first) congregation, thus leading to a decrease in the congregation[1]. But, at the same time, the Sharī’ah also recognizes that it is not always feasible for everyone to come to the Masjid at a particular time for prayers. Therefore, it has allowed the establishment of several different congregations in the same city and, when there is a need, even in the same Masjid[2]. However, this second congregation must be with a different appearance than the first, such as the imām standing a few sufūf (lines) behind where the first imām would normally stand[3]. In the situation mentioned in the query, it would be ideal to set a Jumu’ah time that caters to students as well as the other congregants[4]. However, if that is not possible, then it is permissible to have two congregations in the same Masjid, provided the appearance of the second congregation is different than the first, as mentioned above.
