I WILL BE VERY GRATEFUL IF YOU WOULD KINDLY GUIDE ME WITH THE FOLLOWING. MANY A TIMES MY FRIENDS AND RELATIVES REQUEST THAT I PARTICIPATE WITH THEM IN KHATAMS, SOMETIMES IN THE MASJID AND SOMETIMES AT THEIR RESIDENCE. AM I ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE SOLEY FOR UNITY'S SAKE AND AFTER THE KHATAM PARTAKE OF THE FOOD PROVIDED? SECONDLY, MANY A TIMES MY WIFE IS REQUESTED TO ASSIST IN PREPARING THE MEAL WHICH WILL BE CONSUMED AFTER THE KHATAM. HERE AGAIN SHOULD MY WIFE ASSIST FOR UNITY REASONS?REFUSING WOULD CREATE MANY PROBLEMS. THIRDLY, WHAT IS THE RULING REGARDING FOOD RECIEVED FROM KHATAMS? ARE WE ALLOWED TO CONSUME THIS FOOD? IF NOT WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WITH FOOD ALREADY RECIEVED? FOURTHLY, A FRIEND OF MINE WHO IS A COOK AND EARNS HIS LIVING BY COOKING, IS HE ALLOWED TO CATER FOR THESE KHATAMS?PLEASE CLARIFY EACH POINT MOST CLEARLY IN A MANNER WHERE NO CONFUSION REMAINS.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. Recitation of the Quraan is an act of great virtue and reward. We should inculcate a personal habit to recite the Quraan daily. It is permissible to recite the Quraan and complete it in congregation on condition that it is not done as a custom. [1] According to the description explained in the query the khatam is done as a custom which should be avoided. [2] Never the less, the income of the cook will be halal as catering is his job.
