Misconception regarding Tablighi Jamaat in regards to collected money

Question Detail:

In jamaat the brothers put together money and purchase food,petrol etc the money is thus not fairly redistributed is this permissible because I  thought that in a partnership items ought to be redistributed exactly equally.

Answer :

In your question, you did not explain the details of the unfair redistribution of the funds. Our answer is thus general and not specific to any situation.
When people travel together as in the form of tableegh, etc. and do things collectively, they mutually agree to form a fund[i] to pay for travel and food expenses. The purpose of the fund is not to do business and earn profits to distribute the profits exactly according to one’s contribution.
A mutual fund is created for convenience and it is not possible to maintain complete equality with such funds. For example, if five people travel and each one contributes R100. Food is purchased for R250 which is 50% of the amount. Each ones contribution towards the food is R50. One may eat more than the other. Shariah overlooks such differences[ii]. However, where it is possible to maintain equality in such funds, one should do so. If there is any leftover in such a fund, it should be returned proportionately.
