Is man allowed to wear a red topi or cap? 4. Is a man allowed to wear red socks? 5. Is a man allowed to wear red shoes or sandals? Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. There is a difference of opinion among the Hanafi Fuqahaa with regards to the ruling of men wearing a red garment. The preferred view (Raajih) is that it is Makrooh Tanzeehi (slightly disliked). Hereunder are the answers to the respective questions in the query: 1. It is reported that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam wore a red garment from Yemen. Consider the following narration: عَنْ عَوْنِ بْنِ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ………ثُمَّ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَلَيْهِ حُلَّةٌ حَمْرَاءُ بُرُودٌ يَمَانِيَةٌ قِطْرِيٌّ (رواه ابو داود، كتاب الصلاة، باب في المؤذّن يستدير في أذانه) Abu Juhaifah Radhiyallah Anhu reports, “……….. And then the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam came out and he was wearing red attire, Yemeni Qitri garments. (Sunan Abi Dawood) Many Ulama are of the opinion that the red garments of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam were not completely red, rather consisted of red stripes. Hafidh Ibn Hajar Rahimahullah says in Fath al-Baari: فَإِنَّ الْحُلَلَ الْيَمَانِيَّةَ غَالِبًا تَكُونُ ذَاتَ خُطُوطٍ حُمْرٍ وَغَيرهَا (فتح الباري، قَوْلُهُ بَابُ الثَّوْبِ الْمُزَعْفَرِ) Because in most cases, the Yemeni garments were inclusive of red stripes and stripes of other colors. (Fath al-Baari) Imam Ibn al-Humam Rahimahullah states in Fath al-Qadeer: واعلم أن الحلة الحمراء عبارة عن ثوبين من اليمن فيهما خطوط حمر وخضر (فتح القدير، ج 2، ص 40-41، المكتبة الحقانية) Know well that the red attire consists of two Yemeni garments in which there are red and green stripes. (Fath al-Qadeer) However, other Ulama are of the opinion that the garments of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam were completely red. They say that there is no mention of red stripes in narrations. Allamah Shurumbulaali Rahimahullah says: وَتَأْوِيلُهَا بِذَاتِ الْخُطُوطِ مَرْدُودٌ (حاشية الشرنبلالي على درر الحكام شرح غرر الأحكام، ج 1، ص 312، مير محمد كتب خانه) The interpretation of red stripes is rejected and unacceptable. (Hashiyah Shurumbulaly Ala Durar al-Hukkaam) Nevertheless, Mullaa Ali al-Qari Rahimahullah mentions in Mirqaat al-Mafaateeh that if we do accept that the garments of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam were completely red, then one of the following three interpretations will apply: · The permissibility of wearing red was specific to Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam. · Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam wore red before it became disliked. · Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam wore red to teach the Ummah that its wearing is not prohibited, rather it is better to wear another color. 2. Wearing red is Makrooh Tanzeehi (slightly disliked) in clothing. One does not clothe oneself with a sleeping bag, rather covers oneself while sleeping. Hence, a red sleeping bag and red bed sheet are permissible without any dislike. 3. According to the Fuqaha, a topi or cap is not considered to be an item of clothing. Hence, wearing a red topi is permissible without any dislike. 4. According to the Fuqaha, socks are not considered to be items of clothing. Hence, wearing red socks is permissible without any dislike. If one fears being criticized due to ignorance for wearing red socks, it is advisable to avoid wearing such socks. 5. According to the Fuqaha, shoes and sandals are not articles of clothing. Hence, wearing red sandals or shoes is permissible without any dislike. Furthermore, wearing a Qamees or Kurta with red stripes is permissible without any dislike. A kurta having red embroidery is also permissible without any dislike.
