Assalāmu ῾alaykum wa Rahmatullāhi Wabarakātuh
 
It is permissible and in fact encouraged to make Istikhaara for whatever matter of importance we are faced with. The permissibility of this is clear from the words of the Dua
 
اللهم اني.........اللهم ان كنت تعلم ان هذا الامر.......
Oh Allah if you know that in this matter is good for me.
 
The word امر translated as matter/affair comes in the meaning of generality indicating to the fact that it encompasses every matter.
 
Mulla Ali Qaari  رحمه الله mentions that Istikhaara could be done for any matter whether it is Nikaah, travel ,etc.
