Question Detail:

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,
The following e-mail is circulated (bottom to top), I tried to explain about the sighting of Hilal, but stubborn enough to heed to my words. Please clarify.
Assalamalaikum Brother,

You need not be a scholar to think about simple logic, and all over the Qur’an, Allah is asking us to think.

Time and Date are 2 different things. Time is different all over the world. But date remains same. Time is based on sun and the sun you watch from different places are different. But for Date, the moon, Islamic Calendar (Qur’an 10:5) is based on the Moon, you watch in the same phase from any part of the world. The shape of the moon you watch  on Ramdan 1st, will be the same when you watch it on Ramadan 1st of the other part of the world.

All over the world Juma is on Friday. Say it is on Ramadan 1st in Karnataka. That is, Ramadan 1st is Friday in Karnataka for a year. Then that Ramadan 1st will be on Thursday in Kerala and Wednesday in . That is, when Karnataka people perform Juma on Ramadan 1st, in Kerala people will perform it on Ramadan 2nd and in Oman Ramadan 3rd. That is our present pathetic situation.

Say, if you are fixing a meeting all over the world on a Ramdan 1st, the days will be different in present situation. Meantime if you fix this based on English calendar, the day will be same, though that calendar has got many errors. But if we are unified on Islamic Calendar (Qur’an 10:5), and it is no difficulty in today’s world to calculate the phases of moon, there will not be any discrepancy even in compulsory fasting and all. Let us try to establish the Islamic Calendar which Allah has given us.

Wassalam,

Shameer.

Shameer,

As a layman, I cannot answer your queries. One should require in-depth knowledge of the Holy  Quran, Ahadeeth, to comment on any of the shariah issues.

But I just can say one thing, for example, in
Hyderabad
, Fajr starts at 5.00 but in Mumbai it may be 5.20 where as in Kolkatta it may be 4.40. Why should we follow different timings? Why not all offer Fajr at (say)5.00?

There is a criteria for sighting of the moon which I know(from different reliable sources). If 2 sane momin males give witness that they sighted the crescent at a particular place, then at that particular place, new month starts.

I repeat my request, please see any reliable A'alim. Request you not to send this type of e-mails to me.

Walaikumsalam Brother,

Thanks for your mail.

How do you think about Ramadan 1st on Sunday on some parts of the world, on Monday on some other parts of the world and on Tuesday on other parts of the world. We never see December 1st on Monday on some parts of the world, Tuesday on some other parts , so on. Does that mean that Hijra calendar is baseless? Or Islam has no Calendar? Can we adopt Gregorian calendar when it has no relation with Moon.

“It is He who made the Sun a blazing light and the Moon a shining light and He appointed phases for the Moon so that you may know the count of ages and calculations. Allah has not created this but with purpose. He explains the Ayahs for the people who think” (10:5)

“And for the Moon we have appointed Manazil (positions) till it returned like the old ‘Urjoon’ (withered date stalk).” (36:39).

“Certainly the number of months with Allah is twelve ever since He created the Heavens and the Earth. Of these four are sacred. That is the right religion. And do not wrong to yourselves in them, but just as the disbelievers fight you all together, you too fight them all together and know that Allah is with those who fear Him.” (9:36)

It is reported that the Prophet (saw) said: “Fast at the appearing of the Hilal and celebrate Eid at its appearing, if it is doubtful, then calculate or complete 30”. He also said: “If two Muslims witnessed begin the fasting or celebrate Eid”.

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Shameer,

I could not get what you want to tell/prove. One must follow the shariah, in starting/ending fast and celebrating Eid. Please go through the link below: http://www.askimam.org/fatwa/fatwa.php?askid=1cf6dfc1541ee32fa465d650ef519502

Also there are few FATWA in the same portal.

If you have any queries, please see any reliable Aa'lim.

Dear Brothers,

Assalamu alaikum WR WB,

The observation of the past two days clearly indicates that this Ramadan has begun on Sunday the 31st of August 2008. The angular distance for Wednesday was about 44 degrees and on Thursday it was about 56 degrees. This indicated that Wednesday was the 4th of Ramadan. The rate of travel for this month is less than 12 degrees per day and this indicates that this is a month of 30 days. Those who had observed the crescents of Rajab and Shaban would have noticed the slow growth of the crescents in this month. The Hilaal will not appear on Sunday the 29th of the month. According to Sunnah 30 will be completed on Monday and Shawwal begins on Tuesday irrespective of the Hilaal.

Those who have not fasted on Sunday have missed the first fast of Ramadan and those who began fasting on Tuesday have missed two days of Ramadan. They should compensate according to laws of Shariah by fasting the number of fasts lost in Ramadan after the Eidul Fitre on Tuesday.

Please note that a month will not begin on two days in the world and the Eidul Fitre of one year cannot be on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Wassalam,

Ali manikfan
