Question Summary: Marrying a person that doesn’t pray Question Detail:
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu, Is it permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a man who was raised Muslim but does not pray?
Answer :
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
When a person gets married, the most essential aspect to consider is the religiousness of a person and his/her righteousness. Other aspects and considerations are secondary. A person who fails to fulfill the rights of his Lord will for sure fail in fulfilling the rights of his wife. An Allaah-conscious person will always think about the accountability and consequences of his actions. Rasulullaah (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said,
Translation: “Indeed the woman (and the same applies for the man) is married for her religion, her wealth, and her beauty, so take the one with religion, and may your hands be dusty.” (Tirmidhi 1086, Bukhaari 5090)
We advise against getting married to person who does not pray. The husband and wife ought to assist each other in practicing Islaam and becoming closer to Allaah Ta’aala. If the husband does not perform salaah, there is a fear that the wife may become lax in her salaah and retrogress in her Deen.
And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best.
