Question Summary: Laws of Attraction Question Detail:
I have one doubt whether Law of Attraction is permissible is Islam. Law of attraction includes stages like Self affirmation, gratitude meditation, creative visualisation. Please reply am confused.
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
The “Law of Attraction” is defined as when “one focuses on positive or negative thoughts alone, one will attract positive or negative experiences of his life.”
It is believed by many to be a universal law by which “Like Always Attracts like.” The result of your thoughts creates your reality. You attract whatever you think about, positive or negative, and manifest it into reality. You create your reality.
This is not a law. Rather, it is a “new age” concept that is entirely incompatible with Islam.
Consider the following Ayah:
والله خلقكم وما تعملون (الصّفّت: ٩٦)
“While Allah created you and that which you do?” [As-Saffat: 96]
The Islamic view is that one takes all practical and permissible steps [tadbir] to achieve one's goals but relies on Allah to ultimately grant him success knowing that the outcome has already been written [Taqdeer].
The “law of attraction” does not consider tadbir or Taqdeer, and in fact, its proponents take the false concept of man being in ultimate control much further by promoting disbelief [kufr] and associating partners with Allah [shirk].[1]
According to the “law of attraction” if something dreadful were to happen to you, then it is due to ones negative thoughts.
This claim is easily refuted when one ponders upon the realities around us, then no one would ever slip on a banana peel. Likewise, no one would ever trip or fall or have accidents.
Islam encourages us to be positive and adopt all possible means to avoid anything negative. However, despite being positive and adopting all means to be successful, should anything unfortunate take place, it is attributed to the will of Allah.
