Is it permissible to treat patients of the opposite gender in Ramadhan?

Question Detail:

I have a question ramadan 2016 is soon approaching inshallah. During this period i will be working, i am currently a phyyiotherpist with the NHS and i was wondering if my work will break my fast as it entails handaling women sometimes of the oppisite sex. It is an issue for me as i can not get this time of work, and is the first time faced with this situation as i am new to the profession.
Guidance please inshallah

Answer :

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
In principle, it is permissible for a medical practitioner to see or touch the affected part of a patient if there is a medical need to do so. In that instance the medical practitioner should confine himself only to the need especially when treating patients of the opposite gender.
As a physiotherapist, you are also bound by the same guideline. The challenge of the nafs especially for a young medical practitioner is to confine oneself to the need. Fear Allah and be conscious of Allah before treating patients from the opposite gender. Condition the mind that Allah is All Seeing and I have to stand before Allah on the day of Qiyaamah.
It is permissible to treat patients of the opposite gender in Ramadan.

Types of physiotherapy-
Physiotherapy can be an effective treatment for a plethora of conditions and any one of these treatments can help lessen the recovery time after a variety of surgeries.
Physiotherapists can specialise in a number of different areas including sports medicine, children's health (paediatrics), and women's health and within these parameters there are three different areas of practise. These are:
Musculoskeletal which is also called orthopaedic physiotherapy and is used to treat conditions such as sprains, back pain, arthritis, strains, incontinence, bursitis, posture problems, sport and workplace injuries, plus reduced mobility. Rehabilitation following surgery is also included within this category.
Neurological- This is used to treat disorders of the nervous system including strokes, spinal cord injuries, acquired brain injuries, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. It can also be used for rehabilitation following brain surgery.
Cardiothoracic is the name given to the treatment of used asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and other cardio-respiratory disorders.
