Is it a sin if our parents want us to be something e.g. a doctor but we choose to be something else? it will hurt their feelings but is it important that we choose the profession they want us to be in because they say they know the best for us? another question: if we were in a relationship for a while but repented later because we realised it is wrong, is it okay to hurt the other person in this case to please Allah? Is it okay to move on because the other person is on the wrong path?
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. Sister in Islam, Your zeal to practice on the dictates of Shariah and want to protect yourself from sin is praise worthy and a sign of your Imaan. May Allah Taala keep you steadfast. Ameen. As you know in today’s conventional and complex life style education is a key component for a one to overcome challenges and have a successful future. It is precisely for this reason that parents emphasise and want their children to acquire a career and educate themselves. However, as you have correctly understood this does not permit one to break the commandments of Shariah. It is mentioned in a hadith: عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: " لَا طَاعَةَ لِمَخْلُوقٍ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ " Rasulullah Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “There is no obedience for the creation in the disobedience of Allah Taala.” (Musnad Ahmed-1095) Therefore, if your parents or any other person want you to do anything that contradicts the commands of Allah Taala, it won’t be permissible for you to do it even if they get hurt. You will not be sinful for hurting them, as you are fulfilling the command of Allah Taala. However, the most appropriate approach that you should take since your parents really want you to get education would be that you should explore other options such as online distance learning methods etc. You mentioned “to be something else” what do you mean? If this something else is against the command of Allah Taala then, it too won’t be permissible. It is also impermissible to have relationships out of marriage.
