How should my friend persuade his mom to keep his wedding simple?

My friends friends is in a dilemma and was wondering if you could help me with it. he wants to get married as soon as possible  and he doesnt want a big expensive wedding hes ok with a wedding in a mosque but his mother is persistent that he has a flashy wedding (asian culture) he said if you want that your going to have to wait around 10 years or more becuase i havent got that.
He is mashallah pious and i would class him a muttaqee too an extent. but the mum is saying no he has to have a big wedding or else people would start talking about the first childs wedding and how kanjuice and stingy they were. the fathers ok with whatever the son wants but the mum is persistent because she thinks too much about what other people will say and drop in status in the past his mum has always been the odd one out and different aswell so what should he do?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Your friend’s enthusiasm to conduct a simple wedding in keeping with the advice of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) is an expression of his Iman and love for Sunnah.
Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) is reported to have said:
ان اعظم النكاح بركة ايسره مؤونة]مسند احمد [82/6  
Verily, the most blessed marriage is that which is the least burdensome                                                               [Musnad of Imam Ahmad vol.6 pg.82]
 
 
The father’s cooperation with the son in assisting him to adhere to the Sunnah in also commendable. We understand the difficulty of the mother and the family’s pressure on her. It may be advisable to identify an influential person, perhaps an Alim to encourage your friend’s mother to adhere to the Sunnah and not to give in to family pressure. It is very possible that the simplicity of the wedding will serve as an example for others.
