Question Summary: ‘Eid Program Question Detail:
I am an officer of a student organization in a college-town in USA. Some of our community members are asking me to organize an Eid program ON BEHALF OF OUR ORGANIZATION. But I am worried that if I do so, the non-muslim members will ask me to organize an event for practicing their religion and such events may involve idol worshipping - which I am unable to support (since it contradicts the basic tenets of Islam). However, by constitution of our organization, I can't give special priviledge to any one religion - which means: if I do Eid program ON BEHALF OF OUR ORGANIZATION I will have to arrange an event for non-muslims as well (if they ask for it) ON BEHALF OF OUR ORGANIZATION. So, I argued that I shouldn't organize Eid event ON BEHALF OF OUR ORGANIZATION rather I will do it ON BEHALF OF MYSELF (in our home, which we do in every Eid). But they are obstinate in pressing me. They don't see any problem in arranging another event for non-muslims since they believe that I won't gather any sin for arranging an event for non-muslims even if they bring idols there and worship them or recite charms related to idol-worshipping - which is part of their religious events. So I am asking you: what should be my position in such a matter? Would Prophet arrange Eid programs (during his Madina life) as a state-wise program or would he celebrate it personally? Would he arrange anything for non-muslims' religious events?
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. We require clarification of the following: What does organizing/arranging entail? Do you have to advertise the event (putting up banners, flyers etc.)? Do you just give permission? In the event of "idol-worshipping", will you have to arrange for the idols? You may forward the clarifications to admin@daruliftaa.net titled "Clarifications for Previous Query". The "'Eid Program" for 'Eid ul Adha at the time of the Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) was as follows:
The 'Eid Prayer (the Khutbah before it included)
Qurbani/Udhiyyah (Sacrifice)
Consider the following Hadith: عن البراء قال سمعت النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم يخطب فقال إن أول ما نبدأ من يومنا هذا أن نصلي ثم نرجع فننحر فمن فعل فقد أصاب سنتنا (البخاري ج-٢ ص-١٧، دار المنهاج) Narrated from Bara, he says, "I heard the Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) delivering the sermon (of 'Eid) saying, "The first practice we begin this day of our's with is the Salah, then we return to slaughter (the sacrificial animals). Whosoever does accordingly, he has followed our Sunnah" (Al Bukhari vol.2 pg.17, Dar Al Minhaj) And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best Hisham Dawood Student Darul Iftaa Chicago, U.S.A.
