Answer :

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

There are two aspects pertaining to fasting. One is the apparent rules of fasting and the other is the aims, objectives, and spirit of fasting. If a person abides by the apparent rules of fasting, such as abstention from eating, drinking, and sexual relations from the break of dawn till sunset, his fast will be valid. However, if such a person indulges in haram such as backbiting, he will not attain the spiritual objectives of fasting which is the pleasure of Allah. A person cannot attain the pleasure of Allah by committing haram. Moreover, he will incur the wrath of Allah. Consider the following incident of two fasting women that occurred in the time of the Messenger of Allah, may peace and blessings be upon him:

Two women were fasting. A man said, “Oh Messenger of Allah! There are two women who are fasting and they have nearly perished out of thirst.” The Prophet remained silent. The man returned midday and said, “Oh Prophet of Allah! They are near death.” The Prophet called for them and they came. A bowl was brought. The Prophet commanded one of the two women to vomit in the bowl. She vomited pus, blood, and human flesh until half the bowl filled. The Prophet then commanded the second to vomit in the bowl. She vomited pus, blood, and human flesh until the bowl was full. The Prophet then said, “These two have fasted from that which Allah has permitted for them and have indulged in that which Allah has forbidden upon them. They sat together feasting on the flesh of people (backbiting)”. (Musnad Ahmad V. 39 P.59)^[1]

Likewise, if a person abstains from food and sexual relations from dawn till sunset but injects heroin, his fast will apparently be valid. However, he would forfeit the spiritual objective of fasting by injecting heroin. In matters of worship, a believer ought to be sensitive to fulfilling a command properly by which it may be accepted by Allah. A sensitive believer does not facilitate technical discussions of fiqh which risk the acceptance of his worship.^[2][3]

حدثنا يزيد، أخبرنا سليمان، وابن أبي عدي، عن سليمان المعنى، عن رجل، حدثهم في مجلس أبي عثمان النهدي، قال ابن أبي عدي، عن شيخ في مجلس أبي عثمان، عن عبيد مولى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: أن امرأتين صامتا وأن رجلا قال: يا رسول الله إن هاهنا امرأتين قد صامتا، وإنهما قد كادتا أن تموتا من العطش، فأعرض عنه أو سكت، ثم عاد، وأراه قال: بالهاجرة، قال: يا نبي الله، إنهما والله قد ماتتا أو كادتا أن تموتا قال: " ادعهما " قال: فجاءتا، قال: فجيء بقدح أو عس فقال لإحداهما: " قيئي " فقاءت قيحا أو دما وصديدا ولحما حتى قاءت نصف القدح، ثم قال للأخرى: " قيئي " فقاءت من قيح ودم وصديد ولحم عبيط وغيره حتى ملأت القدح، ثم قال: " إن هاتين صامتا عما أحل الله لهما، وأفطرتا على ما حرم الله عليهما، جلست إحداهما إلى الأخرى، فجعلتا يأكلان لحوم الناس "
