Question Summary: Designer clothing and brand names Question Detail:
Ruling on brand names that are associated with kufr.
1. Many products brand names have names or logo derived from Greek god origins An example of this is Asus, Asus is a large company that uses produces electornic equipment, such as computer screens and cd-drives ect. The origin of the name Asus is derived from Pegasus. Pegasus is a greek god in greek methology.
"According to the company website, the name Asusoriginates from Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology. Only the last four letters of the word were used in order to give the name a high position in alphabetical listings."
Is it kufr/haram for me to use such products.
2. On another note, is wearing brand names that have names of Kufaar on them haram? Such as designer brands such as Ralph Lauren,Peter Jackson,Louis Vutton.
I have read this from a saudi sheik Fawzan in regards to wearing soccer jerseys with names of kufar on them.
"This is to be considered respect and esteem for the Kafir. As long as he is wearing clothes upon which is written the name of the Kafir, or a picture of him, this is respect and esteem for the Kafir. It is not allowed to do this; the least that can be said about it is that it is haram (forbidden in Islam). If [the wearer really does] respect and esteem [the Kafir], he is in danger of apostasy (leaving the fold of Islam). Yes."

Is this really true, or an overstatment. Is respecting the kafir really haram... can i wear these products with names such as Ralph Lauren which are deisgner clothing, which although has a name of a kufaar on them has nothing to do with worship
Please donot give me a rulling based on wearing designer clothes being extravigant. Please give me a rulling on wearing the actual names.
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
(1) ASUS:
According to the company website, the name Asus originates from Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology. Only the last four letters of the word were used in order to give the name a high position in alphabetical listings. The company's slogan/tagline was "Rock Solid. Heart Touching", then "Inspiring Innovation. Persistent Perfection." Currently it is "In Search of Incredible." [1]
The company website states the origin of Asus as the winged horse of Greek mythology.
However, Asus no longer carries any religious signification. It is simply a name of a global electronics brand. It is permissible to use their products.
(2) Designer clothing:
It is not permissible for one to wear branded clothing as a mark of respect for a non-Muslim. [2]
However, if one wears branded clothing for the quality of the product, and not as a mark of respect for a non-Muslim or to imitate the kuffar, then it will not be impermissible.
