Question Summary:
Calling your Country ‘Mother’

Question Detail:

IN INDIA HINDUS CALL COUNTRY AS THEIR MOTHER.THEY SAY MAN TAKES BIRTH IN LAND SO LAND IS THE MOTHER OF MAN.CAN A MUSLIM CALL HIS COUNTRY ITS MOTHER.

Answer :

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
A land may be referred to as mother. Makkah Mukarramah is referred to as Ummul-Quraa, the mother of cities.
One may refer to one’s land of birth as motherland as that land has been the means of one’s birth like one’s mother. Motherland should be understood in the figurative sense.

The Principles and Code of Laws in Hanafi Fiqh (p.146)
“Types and rulings regarding tashabbuh:
1)     Immitation of the beliefs and acts of worship of the Kuffar is kufr and of their custom is Haraam.
2)     Imitation in social dealings, signs of a particular creed, etc. is Makroohe Tahrimi
3)     Imitation in those things which are not specific to any group, religion or creed, and we have no alternative, it is permissible.
4)     Imitating the way of mannerism of even a Muslim fasiq is sinful.
The recognition of tashabbuh lies in the fact that when the common-folk do no anymore regard a thing as being specific to any creed/nation/religion, and this doubt is removed from the heart that the thing in question is specific to any group. But as long as the specialty of that thing/practice remains specific to any group, it will be prohibited.
