Question Summary:
Breaking a fast intention during the month of Ramadhan

Question Detail:

Once I broke a fast during the month of Ramadhan intentionally because I was very thirsty as I had done a lot of physical exercises at school. Is kaffarah (fasting two months) compulsory on me ?

Answer :

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
If a Muslim deliberately breaks his fast during Ramadan with no justifiable reason in Sharī῾āh, then he has to compensate by paying Kaffārah (expiation) for the sin.
The Kaffārah (expiation) for a broken fast, which is in addition to making up the fast for the missed day is sixty consecutive days. If the sixty days is interrupted without a legitimate Shar῾ī reason, then one has to recommence the sixty days.[1]

In the enquired situation, if you broke your fast purely due to thirst, then you are liable to fast for 60 days for Kaffarah (penalty) and one as Qadhaa (Missed Fast).
