Question Summary: Achieve inner peace and to attain normalcy in emotions Question Detail:
I am a 26 yrs. old female. Since my early childhood my mother says I have suffered with severe pain in the back of neck which doctors described as, a result of overthinking and exaggerated emotional response. My mind is never at peace and is constantly filled with numerous indescribable thoughts which make it very difficult for me to fall asleep at nights since a very young age. I fall asleep almost always after fajr. Any emotion i feel is much exaggerated. Especially the negative emotions of pain, and regret for the sins I committed. Any emotional situation i come across, i suffer with heart ache, shortness of breath and depression attacks, which is said to have progressed from neck ache in the childhood. Every specialist in neuro and cardio concluded my diagnosis with the same statement. That i feel emotions of pain 2 folds when compared to others and i think too much which, my nervous system in unable to handle. If i don't stop over thinking then there's no cure for the heart aches. But it is completely involuntary. Whenever i commit sin or i hear or witness anything cruel, injustice or bad in my surroundings or anywhere on earth, i feel regret, and pain in greater depths and for longer durations resulting in sleepless nights, depression attack, difficulty breathing and heart aches. And in recent days i am finding it extremely difficult to stay focused. My mind runs in its own way and never allows me to stay focused and stay present. Please guide me in the light of Quran and hadith to achieve inner peace and to attain normalcy in my emotions.
Answer :
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
Sister in Islaam,
We take note of the contents of your email. We make dua Allah Taa’la grant you courage to overcome your difficulties.
We understand your anxiety and feelings are related to your medical conditions. You should continue exploring ways to have yourself cured. We refer you to the following Hadith:
عن صهيب، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: عجبا لأمر المؤمن، إن أمره كله خير، وليس ذاك لأحد إلا للمؤمن، إن أصابته سراء شكر، فكان خيرا له، وإن أصابته ضراء، صبر فكان خيرا له
Translation: “Abu Yahya Suhaib bin Sinan Radhyallahu Anhu reported that: Rasulullah Sallallahu Alihi Wasallam said “How wonderful is the case of a believer; there is good for him in everything and this applies only to a believer. If prosperity attends him, he expresses gratitude to Allah and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is better for him”. Sahih Muslim (4/2295)
Sister, your pain and anxiety are not in vain. You are being rewarded for every pain and grief you experience. You will see the reward by Allah.
We also advise you to recite Salatul Haajah every day. Recite some portion of the Quran. Also, daily take out time in the morning and evening and engage in zikr. Focus you heart and mind to Allah Taa’la and recite:
لا اله الا الله 100 times.
الله الله 100 times.
Recite the third Kalimah:
سبحان الله و الحمد لله و لا اله الا الله و الله اكبر
And the following dua:
و لاحول و لا قوة الا بالله العلي الغظيم
100 times and make dua with full conviction that Allah Taa’la is السميع (All-Hearing) and البصير (All-Seeing). Be positive and never lose hope.
And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best
