Question Summary: Does the exposure of one’s ankles whilst wearing leather socks nullify your wudhu? Question Detail:
In my understanding, in Hanafi fiqh, if my leather socks fall below the ankle bone my wudu is broken. My question is, if my leather socks fall below my ankle because the airport customs agent places his hands inside my leather socks and as he is doing this, he is pulling the sock towards himself allowing for the sock to fall below the ankle bone, is my Wudu broken because of his action and not mine? Thank you.
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. If the leather socks fall below the ankle bone, the wudhu is not nullified.[1] There seems to be a misconception in understanding the juridical ruling concerning the ankles in leather socks. It is true that it is a condition for the validity of wearing leather socks on which masah could be made to cover the area required in washing the feet in wudhu i.e. up to and including the ankles.[2] The socks falling down below the ankle after they are worn does not invalidate the wudhu (unless the majority of your heels or feet are exposed). Accordingly, if only your ankle was exposed whilst it was being searched by the TSA, this will not nullify your wudhu and your wudhu will remain intact.
