Question Summary: What is the satr for a woman in Salah and what are the required measurements of a sutrah? Question Detail:
1. Where does the satr of a women start when reading salaah, from the chin or from the start of the neck 2. What should the height and width of a sutra be?
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. 1) The satr of a woman in Salah is everything excluding her face, hands, and the feet.[1] The face stretches from one earlobe to the other and from the start of her hair on the forehead to the bottom of her chin. Hence, it is not necessary for the woman to cover her chin in Salah.[2] 2) The minimum requirement of a sutrah[3] is one forearm’s length (ziraa’) in height. There is no necessary requirement for it’s width.[4] However, some scholars have mentioned that it should at least be the width of one finger so it may be visible to people.[5] And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best AbdulMannan Nizami Student Darul Iftaa Chicago, IL, USA Checked and Approved by, Mufti Ebrahim Desai. www.daruliftaa.net
