Question Summary: Morality and discrimination of people Question Detail:
I put you a question a long time ago and i wonder why you ignored it. I am a Christian but my husband is Muslim so i guess i can visit this site and put you questions. My question deals with morality and discrimination of people in Arabic society. I spent some time in Jordan in the house of my husband's parents until they forced me to leave because my granny has white patches on her hands. Since then i have suffered a lot. Still now i feel depressed. Nobody believes that my granny's vitiligo was the reason why i came back. You know how painful it is. My husband had no money to rent a flat so that we could live there until he finished his studies. He will get his diploma in a year and i will come back to him.But the problem is that he is influenced by the society he lives in and its traditions mostly inhumane are rooted deeply in his conscience. He is sure that vitiligo is the most serious genetic disease and that we will never have kids. When i hear this i start to fear i can go mad.He say he loves me and we will be together he won't give in to their pressure but his attitude towards my granny's vitiligo worries me a lot. How can i convince him that it is not worth even talking about that people are equal and this is what Islam teaches ? How can i free his conscience from all those absurd things which are so common in his society? Help me . Thank you.
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Respected sister, We are truly sorry for the belated response. Perhaps we did not receive your question as the Askimam website is inundated with queries. We have a quota system which allows a fixed number of questions within a specific time frame. Therefore, we can only answer a limited amount of questions, since generally much time and effort is required in research before issuing a Fatwa. Your question may have been rejected by our quota system. Our apologies. It is very unfortunate that you were exposed to such conduct and behaviour. Such an attitude goes against the pristine teachings of Islam of ethics and morality. Islam is averse to such ways of thinking and ideologies as you have stated in your query. Speak to your husband in a most diplomatic and kind way. Inform him that as a Muslim, is it not from amongst the beliefs of Islam that the cause of any occurrence in this world is only from Allah? Whether it be of good or bad? Is it not that diseases and sicknesses are transmitted solely by the will of Allah and He alone grants cure? Furthermore, it is mentioned in a prophetic tradition (Hadith) that once our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once partook in having meals with a person who had leprosy.[1] It is mentioned in another prophetic tradition (Hadith) that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, 'There is no 'Adhwa (no disease is conveyed from the sick to the healthy without Allah's permission), nor Safar, nor Hamah." A Bedouin stood up and said, "Then what about my camels? They are like deer on the sand, but when a mangy camel comes and mixes with them, they all get infected with mange." The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Then who conveyed the (mange) disease to the first one?"[2] Furthermore, remind your husband the submission of Prophet Ibrahim [Abraham] (peace be upon him) as mentioned in the Qur’an: “…Who has created me, and it is He Who guides me (78). And it is He Who feeds me and gives me to drink (79). And when I am ill, it is He who cures me (80). And Who will cause me to die, and then will bring me to life (again); (81) And Who, I hope will forgive me my faults on the Day of Recompense, (the Day of Resurrection), (82)” [26: 78-82] It is clear from the above referred that all conditions emanate from the divine will of Allah. Respected sister, we hope that the situation you are facing is not giving you a bad impression of Islam. Most certainly, you have observed some of the actions of your Muslim husband in which you had definitely witnessed some of the beautiful teachings of Islam. We wish to advise you to be open minded in searching for the truth. You may obtain authentic Islamic literature so that you may well educate yourself about Islam.
