Answer :

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
The actual Shar’ī distance by which a person becomes a traveller is 3 days according to the early traditional scholars.[1] This distance is in relation to the modes of travel adopted by people in the bygone times. For faster modes of land travel that prevail nowadays, ‘Ulamā have calculated the equivalent amount of miles by which a person will have to perform Qasr Salāh. This is 48 miles. However, the later ‘Ulamā have differed whether this refers to Shar’ī miles or English miles, hence the difference of 77km and 87 km.
However, majority of the ‘Ulamā nowadays take 77.8 km (78 km) as the Shar’ī distance of safar.[2]
