Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh. It is our ‘aqīdah that Allah Ta‘ālā is the One Who gives illness[1] and cure. Medication is only a means Allah Ta‘ālā has put in this world to bring about a cure.[2] Hence, it must be kept in mind that by medication or treatment (dawā’) in Islam, we mean something that is a means to a cure, and in reality it is Allah Ta‘ālā that cures. The hadith you refer to states: لكل داء دواء “For every illness there is a cure.” (Sahīh Muslim; Mishkāt al-Masābīh, 4515) This hadith means that Allah Ta‘ālā has created a means of treatment for every illness and disease that He has created in this world. Hence, in another version of the hadith, Rasūlullāh (sallAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: ما أنزل الله داء إلا أنزل له شفاء “Allah has not sent down any illness except He has sent down its cure.” (Sahīh al-Bukhārī; Mishkāt al-Masābīh, 4514) If doctors assert that “there is no cure” for a particular illness, this is only an expression of their present limited knowledge. It does not mean no cure in fact exists. It should be remembered, however, that it is Allah Ta‘ālā’s prerogative whether he chooses to give His slave good health or ill health. Bear in mind that in illness too there is great benefit and reward for the sincere slaves of Allah Ta‘ālā. Rasūlullāh (sallAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: ما يصيب المسلم من نصب ولا وصب ولا هم ولا حزن ولا أذى ولا غم حتى الشوكة يشاكها إلا كفر الله بها من خطاياه “A Muslim is neither afflicted with fatigue, nor sickness, nor worry, nor concern, nor injury, nor anxiety, not even a thorn that pricks him, except Allah expiates by means of them some of his sins.” (Sahīh al-Bukhārī, Sahīh Muslim; Mishkāt al-Masābīh, 1537) It is a believer’s attitude to endure patiently whatever Allah Ta‘ālā has decreed for him. The great Nabī of Allah Ta‘ālā, Hazrat Ayyūb (‘alayhissalām), endured terrible illness for several decades before Allah Ta‘ālā granted him shifā’. There is great reward in patient endurance of suffering if one intends the pleasure of Allah Ta‘ālā. Nonetheless, good health and physical wellbeing are indeed great blessings of Allah Ta‘ālā. Thus, Allah Ta‘ālā likes that His slave turns to Him and asks for good health. You may read the following du‘ā’ for shifā’: أَذْهِبْ الْبَاسَ رَبَّ النَّاسِ، اشْفِ وَأَنْتَ الشَّافِي لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا Azhibil Ba’s Rabban Naas. Ishfi. Wa Antash Shaafee. Laa Shifaa’a illaa Shifaa’uk. Shifaa’al laa yughaadiru saqamaa. “Remove adversity, Lord of Men! Give cure! You are the One Who gives cure. There is no cure but Your cure. [Grant such] cure that leaves no illness.” (Sahīh al-Bukhārī, Sahīh Muslim; Mishkāt al-Masābīh, 1530) And Allah Ta‘ālā Knows Best Zameelur Rahman Student Darul Iftaa UK Checked and Approved by, Mufti Ebrahim Desai. www.daruliftaa.net
