Question Summary:
Keeping the name Kiyaan

Question Detail:

Can I keep the baby boy name as 'Keyaan' or 'Kiyan' ?(for my expected baby, In Sha Allah). Found the meaning in some websites as King, Prince, or Crown. The name is of Iranian Origin. Please advise.

Answer :

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
As Muslims, we are advised to assume good names for our children since the name of a person has an effect on his traits and characteristics.

Nabi salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said regarding keeping good names: “indeed you shall be called on the day of Qiyaamah with your names and the names of your fathers, so give good names to yourselves”.[1]

Hereunder follows our response regarding the name that you have enquired about:

The name Kiyaan is a Persian word meaning “Crown, King”.[2] One may keep the name.
However, one should try to keep the names of the prophets and the Sahabah (Radhiyallahu Anhum).
