Question Summary: Praying janāzah salāh in the masjid Question Detail:
Can you please clarify the following for me as I am living in England and due to the weather conditions and lack of shelter, janāzah salāh is prayed in the masjid. 1. Is it permissible for us to pray janāzah salāh in the jamā῾at khāna of a purpose built masjid? If not can you pray in a hall which is part of the building but is not dedicated for salāh? 2. Is it permissible to pray janāzah salāh in the jamāt khāna of a musallāh (not purpose built masjid, but converted building which has not been dedicated as a masjid) where five times daily salāh,jummah and eid takes place?
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykumwa-rahmatullāhiwa-barakātuh. 1. It is makrūh tahrīmī (close to harām) to offer janāzah salāh in a masjid proper. The masjid proper is that area which is designated as the actual masjid area. It is in this area where I῾tikāf is performed. Coming out of that area without a valid excuse will invalidate the I῾tikāf. Janāzah salāh should be performed out of the masjid proper, which in some places is known as the Sahn or courtyard area. However, if there is a legitimate/valid Sharī῾ reason to perform janāzah salāh in the masjid proper that will be excused. A Sharī῾ reason could be a bad weather condition, the sahn is small, the crowd is huge and it is feared that the people will get wet in the rain then janāzah salāh may be performed in the masjid. 2. It is permissible to pray in a Mussallā(jamā῾at khāna)because it does not fall under the ruling of a Sharī῾ Masjid. Here under are some differences between a masjid and a mussallā: Masjid is a sanctified area, in which the rewards of prayers in congregation increase 25 to 27 times. Masjid is normally made into a waqf or endowment. Once a masjid is erected, it will always be a masjid and the property of Allah. It cannot return to being the property of any person or community even those who may have paid for establishing it. Musallā is a place wherein people perform salāh but it is not a designated place such as the masjid, therefore, the reward of the congregation is not 25 to 27 times. It is permissible for menstruating women to enter into a musallā to attend classes or lectures, a menstruating woman cannot enter the masjid proper.
