As salam o elikum, Can I apply for getting a grant from supra-national organizations (UNESCO, UN, American Aid) for starting a social business in a muslim country for example open a school (where I will charge reasonable fee) or provide health facilities for needy people in low budget, etc. I am confused becasue I want to start a social welfare but with the money of such oganizations, is it allowed for a muslim?
Answer :
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh We commend your good intentions to promote goodness by conducting social welfare schemes. May Allah accept your noble intentions. Aameen. While it is commendable to conduct social welfare in promoting healthcare, education and other activities, one should be cautious regarding the source of the funds received for the social welfare work. There are many aspects to consider when receiving donations from other organizations and donors. What conditions are attached to the social grant? Are you forced to promote a particular form of religion? Are you bound by the philosophy and ideology of the donor organization? What are the implications of promoting Islamic forms of education through your welfare work? What strings are attached to the social grant? Are there any hidden agendas in providing the social grant? We advise to submit the terms and conditions of the social grant for our review in order for us to advise you further. And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best Ismail Desai, Darul Iftaa
